Robert Burakoff, Affiliated Consultant

Robert Burakoff helps nonprofit organizations and funders meet critical challenges, pursue new opportunities, and increase mission impact. Providing nonprofits with an alternative to process-heavy strategic planning and evaluation, Bob combines a deep understanding of mission-driven organizations with the powerful focus and results orientation of for-profit consulting.

From 1993 to 1998, Bob was the Founding Director of Harvard Business School’s Initiative on Social Enterprise, a major initiative on nonprofit leadership and management and on business involvement in the social sector. Bob worked with HBS faculty leaders to define its strategy, develop its relationships with the nonprofit sector, attract funding, and create its research agenda and programs. These include new MBA courses, executive programs for nonprofit CEOs and board members, and programs supporting social-sector involvement by business leaders.

In 1996 Bob founded HBS Community Enterprise (CE) in partnership with McKinsey & Company. CE features teams of MBA Fellows and McKinsey consultants who undertake intensive consulting engagements with major Boston nonprofits working in the arts, economic development, youth, education, human services, and city government. In addition to designing and leading the program, Bob acted as a senior partner on each of the consulting teams, with ultimate responsibility for client relationships and project impact.

Previously, Bob served in a number of administrative, external relations, and planning roles at Harvard Business School, and practiced as a legal services attorney. He holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
