Example: How do we more effectively share knowledge about the types of charitable grant programs that best achieve results?
One of the largest charitable foundations in the U.S. seeks measurable progress on a wide range of social goals — from foster care reform to improving K-12 education — by making thousands of grants to nonprofit organizations each year.
They hired us to help their grant makers more effectively share information about what works and what doesn’t. The resulting knowledge management function helps grant makers better collect, catalogue, access, and utilize information about grant program effectiveness. Because it’s easier for grant makers to share what they know, the organization is better able to exploit its deep expertise in strategic philanthropy. Thousands of nonprofit grant recipients have boosted their results by adopting strategies and tactics that have proven effective in advancing various social goals.

Example: How can we motivate fleet drivers to take specific actions to reduce their fuel consumption?
One of the largest providers of commercial fleet management services, together with one of the most respected environmental nonprofits, asked us to develop strategies for motivating drivers to conserve fuel.
Our recommendations for changing driver behavior included important messages, outreach channels, leverage points (e.g., incentives, programs, and tools for influencing drivers), and collaborative partnerships. All were rooted in findings taken from interviews, surveys, social-psychological research, and consultation with industry and subject-matter experts. Although the results of our work are proprietary, our recommendations are saving fuel and money, and are being widely implemented.
